Accessing new Brazilian football revenue streams: expertise required

Brazilian football clubs will have the chance to double their current revenues over the next few years thanks in large part to the 2014 Brazil World Cup, according to a new study by the Brazilian arm of international consulting group Crowe Horwath. The prediction is that last year´s R$250 million combined figure, derived mainly from ticket sales, could reach R$520 million by 2014 thanks mainly to additional revenue streams to be made possible by preparations for the 2014 Cup.

In contrast to their strong performances on the field, Brazilian football clubs have relatively limited business models in comparison to professional sporting outfits from Australia, the US and Europe, with significant need for better marketing and management practices. The new study forecasts that once the ongoing spate of stadium renovations and facilities upgrades are complete clubs will have more opportunities to access additional income from the likes of corporate hospitality, stadium retail and dining, naming rights and other sponsorship categories.

Despite the patent opportunities, significant work is required to bring clubs up to date with world´s best practice in such areas, which are often non -existent in even the foremost Brazilian clubs.
