Rio 2016 architecture competition launched

The competition for the design of a range of 2016 Olympics facilities in Rio de Janeiro´s ‘Porto Maravilha’ redevelopment has been launched, with prizes of up to R$80k on offer.

Called Olympic Port, the competition is being run by the Brazilian Architect’s Institute, the Rio city council and the Rio 2016 Organising Committee and proposals must be submitted by January 25.

The projects involved are: the media and officials accommodation villages, consisting of 10,600 rooms; and the centres for non-accredited media, operations, technology, uniforms, distribution and accreditation. Additionally, the projects should incorporate a convention centre and a hotel, while a key aspect of the design requirements is post-2016 Olympics usage.

As reported at the end of October, although international groups are able to participate a Brazilian architect must lead the submission. Further details (Portuguese only) available here
