Rio Games ‘strategic pillars’ to permeate all preparations

The president of the Rio 2016 Organising Committee for the Olympic and Paralympic Games, Carlos Arthur Nuzman, has outlined five strategic pillars that will underpin all the Games planning and organisation efforts at the 123rd International Olympic Committee (IOC) Session, in Durban, South Africa.

The presentation was delivered as part of a progress report on preparations for the Games, following a 12 month period involving the foundation phase for the organisation, including the creation of a Games-wide planning framework.

The five pillars are:
- Technical Excellence
- Memorable Celebrations
- Global Image of Brazil
- Transformation through Sport
-Growth of the Olympic and Paralympic Movements

These were developed from the overall Vision and Mission for the Games, which are:

Vision - All Brazilians uniting to deliver the greatest event on earth and proudly advancing through sport our national promise of progress.

Mission - To stage an excellent Games, with memorable celebrations that will promote the global image of Brazil, underpinned by sustainable transformation through sport, social and urban development, and contributing to the growth of the Olympic and Paralympic Movements.

Commenting on their progress so far, Nuzman underlined that there is now an established governance model that allows them to monitor project progress and also provides a framework for solving problems, while he also highlighted the renewed support of Brazil’s president, Dilma Rousseff, and their progress in crucial tasks involving the three levels of government.
