The Brazilian federal government has established the framework for a new Special Secretariat of Security for Major Events, which will have responsibility for coordinating federal, state and municipal activities involving public safety during the 2013 FIFA Confederations Cup and 2014 World Cup, although the 2016 Rio Olympics remains under the auspices of the Olympic Public Authority.
The new body will be headed by Federal Police commissioner, Jose Ricardo Botelho, whose initial tasks will be training security forces and the purchase of special equipment and specific technologies, offering potential business opportunities for suppliers. The secretariat will have its own budget and will receive proposals from all the states that will host the 2014 World Cup matches.
At this stage the body will be disbanded in 2015, however there are provisions to allow the secretariat to continue working with other events into the future.
