Accessing the big guns to seek out opportunities

In a play to gain important links to some of the main decision makers involved in 2014 World Cup and Rio 2016 infrastructure preparations, the UK´s trade and investment arm, UKTI, recently held an event in London bringing together contractors and consultants involved in the 2012 Olympics with five big Brazilian construction groups already working on key projects and firmly in the reckoning for more major contracts over the coming years.

As reported by the UK´s building.co.uk news site, representatives of Brazilian construction giants OAS, Odebrecht, Andrade Gutierrez, Carioca Christiani-Nielsen Engenharia and Concremat were in London for the talks, which had two main aims: giving the Brazilians ideas on how to deliver a “world-class, low carbon” sporting event, and providing UK firms with a pathway to contracts for work on 2014 and 2016 preparations.

Andrew Bacchus, head of UKTI’s construction and global sports projects team, indicated that the talks were important for UK firms wanting to be part of Brazilian consortiums being put together for major Games and Cup contracts, or to be part of these big firms’ supply chains.

Similar initiatives for Australian businesses are currently being developed in association with a trade mission planned for July 2011.
