Urban transport a key to Cup preparations

2011 will see the beginning of a massive range of projects in Brazil’s preparations for the 2014 FIFA World Cup and the upgrading of transportation systems in all 12 host cities will be one of the main focuses, offering a gamut of opportunities for local and international businesses.

Bus Rapid Transport (BRT) is by far the most important solution being utilised, building on an already strong tradition of bus networks throughout both urban and rural Brazil. For the Cup, BRT’s are considered the most viable alternative mainly because of the short timeframe involved and the reduced costs in relation to rail systems, however a number of unique complementary factors are also relevant.

Brazil has significant expertise in road-based transport, from vehicle design and production right through to innovative ethanol-based fuel systems that utilise the country’s own natural resources. On top of that, Brazilian cities are generally well-prepared for BRT’s, with city councils and private operators around the country offering considerable know-how in the area.

Taking all this in to account, the BRT’s are considered both a viable and practical choice for Brazil and the main challenge now is ensuring the new systems are developed to the best possible standards, providing both efficient and safe transport for the 2014 Cup but also for Brazil’s increasingly pressing public transportation needs.
