Ex Central Bank head to give 2016 organisation massive boost

Although his final decision is still pending, Henrique Meirelles, the highly regarded ex-president of Brazil´s Central Bank, looks set to take on the massive task of preparing Rio de Janeiro for the 2016 Olympics, following President Dilma´s recent invitation to the head role.

Meirelles would become the president of the Olympic Public Authority and, by all accounts, would bring a tonne of credibility and competence to the ongoing preparations for the event, which are already creating serious issues for the Rio city and state governments as well as the federal groups involved in the planning.

Meirelles has asked for some time to analyse the position and insisted that he would require the capacity to appoint other key roles in the organisation and run things free from political or other interference.
