State Sport centre boost in Rio Grande do Sul

In a specific example of the ongoing push in Brazil to develop higher standard sport facilities around the country, the federal government has just announced R$5 million in funding for the “State Centre for Sport Training”, which is set to undergo a significant overhaul in preparation for the 2016 Olympics.

Minister of Sport Orlando Silva pointed out that the funding comes following an agreement with the state´s governor Tarso Genro to turn the Centre into a regional hub of athletic development, with the renovated facility to be known as the “Casa do Esporte” (Home of Sport). The announcement comes just a week after Congress passed new legislation facilitating the creation of such hubs in key cities nationwide.

The new facility will become the headquarters for sport in the state, bringing together the sport secretariat, federations, special state sport foundation and the future 2014 FIFA base.
