A call for event-driven boost to Brazil´s creativity

Participants at the recent United Nations Conference about Trade and Development (UNCTAD) have discussed how Brazil should use its upcoming string of major international events to showcase its creative potential.

With the country heading into a golden period of international events, including Earth Summit 2012, also known as Rio +20 to mark 20 years since the important Eco 92 event, the 2014 World Cup and the 2016 Rio Olympics, there is a chance for a major boost to Brazil´s “creative economy potential”, according to the director of the Creative Industries Economy Program from UNCTAD, Edna Santos.

She added that the creative economy should be compatible with greener policies, which are particularly relevant to hosting the Cup and Olympics.

Amongst various definitions, the United Kingdom designates the creative economy as “those industries based on individual creativity, skill and talent with the potential to create wealth and jobs through developing intellectual property”, including a range of diverse sectors including advertising, architecture, crafts, film, music, television and designer fashion.

According to UNCTAD, China it is the leading country of creative economy output, followed by United States and Germany. Brazil is it not among the 20 biggest producers of the sector yet.
